Harry Thompson (1960-2005) was born in London and was educated at Highgate school and Brasenose College, Oxford, where he edited the university newspaper, Cherwell. He joined the BBC as a trainee in 1981 and eventually became one of the most successful television comedy producers delighting millions of viewers with such enduring UK hits as Have I Got News for You, They Think it's All Over and Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
He wrote a biographies of Peter Cook, Richard Ingrams, and Tintin creator Herge as well as a novel This Thing of Darkness which made it to the Booker longlist.
