Philip Kaplan was born in California and is a former art director of the American magazine Playboy. In the 1980s he started working for himself with an idea for a book about the hundreds of thousands of Americans who served in England during the war and spent a lot of time interviewing veterans. The book, One Last Look, sold up to 90,000 copies and he became more interested in doing more books about the war. He moved to Cheltenham, UK after meeting his wife.
