Falsely accused of murder in his home town in 1796, rather than abscond to Australasia or the Americas James Walker opts to join the Corps of Marines (later Royal Marines) as a lieutenant. Walker takes part on the periphery of the Battle of St. Vincent during the Napoleonic Wars and is later ordered by Admiral Nelson to destroy gun emplacements on the island of Majorca. He commands a landing on the French coast, to gather information on Napoleon's impending invasion of England.
