At 47, promotion still eluded Fitton, despite his many victorious sea-fights. Lieutenant Michael Fitton, commanding HMS gun-brig Cracker, was on his third voyage to Spain as escort to ships carrying supplies for Lord Wellington's army in the Peninsula when he came into direct confrontation with an American privateer, the Lexington. With this encounter he once again faced his old enemy George Clewes.
