The Atlantic Ocean meets Europe at the west coast of Ireland. Ireland was also a target for foreign powers to attempt to undermine the British Empire. Centuries of religious and economic slights had ensured the population was ripe for revolution, which the French intended to take advantage of. The officers and men of the King’s navy had to obey their duty to maintain the security of the kingdom but there were other considerations that created a conflict of interest.
