Manly Treegate, an orphan, accompanies his uncle on a routine trip to Norfolk. He is captured and pressed into service as a powderboy aboard a British warship, HMS Leopard. Later he serves on a Haitian pirate ship before he finally returns to relatives in Salem, Massachusetts.
