The adventures of Captain Brilliant, who commands the 12-pounder frigate Desdemona, and his second, Lieutenant Hurricane. Both men marry and their wives accompany them on a voyage to Chesapeake Bay.

Brilliant and the Desdemona go on to take an 18-pounder French frigate, losing their own ship in the process, and then sail back to England taking three rich prizes on the way. The novel ends as the Peace of Amiens ends the war.
