The year is 1708 and Matthew has come a long way since his humble beginnings as an orphan in Whitby. Based now in Newfoundland, a mostly English colony, is achieving a second ambition, beginning to accrue some substance as a fur trader in the North Atlantic and local politician, who evenhandedly adjudicates disputes between the French and English colonists. When the English Navy sail into Esperantia Matthew sails in a rescue mission to Hudson's bay. But the true agenda is to foil the French.
