When the French national frigate Hortense, the crew of which has been decimated by fever, rescues a drowning John Cotterell from the sea we are introduced to its crew and passengers, including revolutionaries, former privateers, ex aristo officers, an English prisoner, men and women, white and black. This disparate group must combat the English and the elements to reach France.
It is unusual and refreshing to see a book of this genre written with a French perspective and learn something of the lives of the French sailors who fought. The book also has a side theme about Jersey fishermen and their lives catching cod on the far off Grand Banks of Newfoundland.
A well written book which I enjoyed and am looking forward to the sequel.
