David Lyon's 'Sailing Navy List' is one of the great works of naval reference, detailing every ship employed by the Royal Navy, whether purpose-built, taken from the enemy, purchased or hired. Organised by era, ship type and class, it is a useful resource for anyone with a query about British sailing warships. At the time of his death in 2000, he was close to completing a follow-up volume intended to provide similar data for ships of the vitally important, but poorly documented period that saw the introduction of steam power and the gradual replacement of sail.

Now brought to fruition by Rif Winfield, this book follows the same pattern dividing the material into broad types and then into classes, giving details of design and construction history, technical specifications and the fates for all warships. Appendices also cover captured, purchased and hired vessels, as well as Coast Guard and packet vessels for which the Navy was responsible. It is extensively illustrated with a representative collection of original plans from the little-seen collection at the National Maritime Museum.
