The 1820s saw the darkest days of the Atlantic slave trade, which not only tortured Africans, but shamed and corrupted the buccaneers who transported them. A well-meaning law had declared blacks contraband. Brigs were pursued and seized by British patrols. And the slave captains had but one recourse - to drown the evidence of their crimes!
