During the period 1798 to 1803 a Yankee skipper's ambivalent feelings towards slavery and love lead him to drift ineffectually through life.
He fails to liberate a childhood friend sold illegally into slavery, drifting into the US Navy and out again, drifting into carrying slaves, drifting into smuggling, drifting in and out of love, and eventually drifting onto a lee shore.
