Adam MacAdam and his friend Jim Carslake volunteer to sail Commander Cheviot's yacht Evadne to the Mediterranean where she is to be sold. Their journey proves to be anything but a holiday as they set off from the River Wye to their destination in Cyprus. They dodge a waterspout in the Atlantic and then find, once they have passed Gibraltar, they have to deal with modern day Barbary pirates, gun-runners and a ruthless man who is seeking the legendary gold of the Knight Templars.
