Great Britain dominated the oceans of the world as the country struggled to contain the expansion of France. In the Baltic the situation was complicated by the vested interests of the powers that bordered the sea but Britain was determined to maintain her freedom to trade. Any threat would be responded to vigorously to protect the vital trade, especially as the Baltic was the source of many materials that were essential to the shipbuilding industry.
